In contrast, nurture seemed to be more substantially present in his adult life. In this part of my assignment I will be explaining the physical and psychological changes which at be associated with ageing.

As a person ages they may experience physical and psychological changes, the physical changes can be changes to the skin and appearances or it can be degeneration of sense organs and sight to an individual. The psychological changes can be the effects on confidence and self-esteem or the loss of independence from ageing to an individual.

The body can experience any or all of the following changes depending on the individual that it is occurring to. P5 One psychological problem that could occur with aging is memory loss.

Memory loss is a cognitive change that occurs when a loss of nerve cells in the brain reduce the ability of nerves to transmit electrical signals causing a sense of things slowing down. A number of prescription and over-the-counter medications can interfere with or cause loss of memory.

Possible culprits include: anti-anxiety medications, sleeping pills and pain medications given after surgery. Taking drugs and sleeping pills are two negative factors that Michael Jackson had taken which could have affected his brain and trigger the ability to remember things.

Forgetting things like relatives birthdays may also make the family feel as if they are being forgotten about. The brain working slower than it usually does may cause extra frustration throughout the day for an older person.

For example if Michael was to be questioned by an interviewer or had to remember lyrics from his old songs while being on tour he may find this impossible as he will feel that he has lost the ability to work much longer. This could make Michael feel useless resulting in a loss of self-worth alongside with decreasing his self-confidence as a performer.

P5 Some of the most obvious physical changes that occur with aging are the deterioration of senses. Hearing is one sense that will begin to deteriorate. As certain people get older they may need the additional help of a hearing aid and may even need to lip-read.

This is because the tiny hair cells within the ear either become damaged or die. As these tiny little hairs do not grow back, damage has already been done as the hearing can be limited or permanent unless the use of an aid is introduced.

Age is the biggest single cause of hearing loss. Hearing loss that develops as a result of getting older is often known as age-related hearing loss. Most people begin to lose a small amount of their hearing from around 40 years of age.

This hearing loss increases as you get older. It may also be harder to hear consonants. This can make understanding speech in background noise very difficult. Michael may find this difficult, as he would only be able to hear his background music with hearing aids.

Family and friends may also lose their patience when it comes to having a conversation, as they may not want to speak loudly or repeat themselves when talking.

Physiological changes in the muscles make loss of leg strength a common problem as people age, and insufficient activity, diabetes and other health problems can make matters worse. This is when the joints cease up with age and bones become more brittle. Elderly people may also struggle with the ability to balance, so going slow may be the option they feel safest with. M3 This can be particularly frustrating for elderly people as they see such a busy world rushing past them they tend to feel left behind and useless.

Michael Jackson would feel this strain, as being a singer-songwriter and a performer are two are very physical and energetic jobs.

Michael always had the energy to work hard and push for his success to make sure his music was being noticed! Nevertheless, as Michael was getting older and started to take drugs and being addicted to plastic surgery, he had lost his motivation and began to lose his spark as he was not able to sing a full song without getting tired or feeling weak due to what he was taking. Although Michael may feel like this because he can no longer do the things people adored him for, to overcome any loss of self-worth Erikson argued that if the older generation were to reminisce on the times when they were at their peak, they would create a sense of ego-integrity and retain their self-worth.

In this part of my assignment I will be explaining two theories of ageing. Ov er the years, many theories have emerged to explain the process of ageing and how it can effect different individuals. Aging is a mysterious process, the aging process reflects all the changes that occur over the course of life. For example, as a human being you grow, you develop and you reach maturity.

Being a young individual, ageing is exciting it leads to later bedtimes and curfews, and more increases independence. By middle age, another candle seems to fill up the top of the birthday cake. Middle age also is the time when people begin to notice a fair amount of physical decline.

There are many examples of theories that combine with ageing. Biological theory is one of many examples as this is a theory that suggests ageing is caused by biological factors and it includes explanations such as: Free Radicals DNA Damage Inherited defects that results in aging On the other hand, non-biological theory is a theory that ageing is caused by factors outside of our body and it includes explanations such as: Disengagement Theory Activity Theory Continuity Theory The two theories of ageing that I have chosen to explain is disengagement and activity theory.

Disengagement theory is a theory that outlines a process of disengagement from social life that people experience as they age.

The theory states that, over time people withdraw, or disengage from the social roles and relationships that they central to their life in adulthood.

With this particular theory Cumming and Henry had situated aging within the social system and offered a set of steps to outline how the process of disengagement occurs as one ages and why this is important and beneficial to the social system as a whole. They based their theory on data from several hundred adults from middle to old age. Based on this data Cummings and Henry created the following postulates that comprise the theory of disengagement. People lose social ties to those around them because they expect death, and their abilities to engage with others deteriorate over time.

The disengagement process for men and women differs due to their different social roles. A person is ready to disengage when they are aware of the short time remaining in their life and they no longer wish to fulfil their current social roles and society allows for disengagement in order to provide jobs for those coming of age, to satisfy the social needs of a nuclear family, and because people die. Activity Theory: The activity theory, also known as the implicit theory of ageing proposes that successful ageing that occurs when older adults remain active and maintain social interactions.

This theory argues that when the ageing process is delayed, the quality of life is enhanced when older people remain socially active. According to this theory it is important for older people to stay active, some individuals try there best to stay in work because they still want to be independent and still feel a part of society. They also want to keep busy because they know that they are going to pass away soon.

The activity theory and the disengagement theory were the two major theories that outlined successful aging in the early s. The theory was developed by Robert J. Havighurst in The process of the activity theory is to overlook inequalities in health and economics that hinders the ability for older people to engage in such activities. The activity theory also reflects the functionalist perspective that an individual develops in middle age should be maintained in later years. The theory predicts that older adults that face role loss will substitute former roles with other alternatives.

The benefits of the activity theory is that it i ncreases the life expectancy as it associates with corresponding gains in physical, social and emotional wellbeing which all leads to successful Aging.

M2: Discuss two major theories of ageing in relation to the development of the individual. Linking back to my previous assignment, I will now be discussing the activity and disengagement theory in relation to the development of my chosen individual who is Michael Jackson. As Michael approached his older years it became clear that he would be staying out of the public eye.

This was because of various reasons such as spending less time on his music and trying to fulfil the role of being a father to his three children. Michael was married to Lisa Marie Presley in They both had a lot in common as Lisa was the daughter of the late and great Elvis Presley, she was much like Michael as they both had been protected and sheltered from the real world, both felt they missed out on their childhood and both had problems with the media.

At the time of their engagement Michael was going through his first child sexual abuse allegations and Lisa was a sense of comfort for Michael as he was scrutinized by the public. Michael was supported by his wife as he became addicted on painkillers, she urged him to enter rehabilitation and settle the allegations against him out of court.

Even though their marriage only lasted two years, after which Presley filed for divorced, it can be said that Michael had never emotionally and physically connected with someone as much as his ex-wife. It has been suggested that Michael had emotionally grown whilst married to Lisa Marie.

However, It is can also be said that it may not have been because of his marriage as to why Michael became more private but because he was being scrutinized by the media and general public.

Michael later went on to engage in a relationship with the mother of his two first children; Prince Michael and Paris.
